Things that should not be mentioned.
Much like our internal feelings, thoughts & desires these 12 works are not physically tangible, we will for now experience them on our screens. Details in each piece hint at a wider picture revealing the narrative from a past relationship. Rooted in the domestic this process of making is used as a form of therapy where Lyddi J. picks apart elements that have created for her, 'psychological bruises'.
Each work goes through several stages of construction within a physical process of making. Painting, Drawing, Image Making, Cutting and Layering lead to a scanning process where digital manipulations and text are added. Each final assemblage is brought together on the screen, thus it shall be displayed in that same way. A fitting form of display for a body of work that was conceived during the covid-19 lockdown where we weren't able to experience art in a physical space - in many cases we still are not able to do this.
'Things that should not be mentioned.' presents to the viewer a mixture of dense detail, text and images alongside quickly digestible snapshots, symbols and forms which take us to a common language of emojis, memes and logos. There is a strong presence of brush strokes highlighting the handmade elements of the work, reminding us of the personal, emotional connection to the content.
Working on this project has given the artist-maker a sense of personal release however she continues to invite the viewer to impart their own experiences into the work. Carefully thought out language and spaces within the work allow for personal interpretation from the viewer, making the experiences of the artist a catalyst for thought.
